Connecting the North Sea to Society

For more than 50 years, NGT has been connecting offshore energy production in the North Sea with consumers and industry onshore.

Since 1973, we have owned and operated an integrated offshore and onshore infrastructure system consisting of pipelines, offshore platforms, and our gas processing plant in Uithuizen.

Our role is simple but essential: ensuring that energy produced at sea is transported safely, reliably, and efficiently to the places where society needs it.

As the energy system changes, so does our role. We believe that existing offshore infrastructure should be utilized for as long as possible, as long as it creates value for society—first for natural gas and, where technically and economically feasible, subsequently for new energy carriers such as hydrogen and CO₂.

From Dallas to Uithuizen

NGT was founded in 1973. The company’s founders were extraordinary businessmen: the Hunt brothers from Dallas, Texas. In fact, the character of J.R. Ewing in the TV series “Dallas” was based on one of the brothers.

Placid Oil, the Hunt brothers’ company, discovered the L10 gas field in the Dutch sector of the North Sea and planned to lay a pipeline to bring the natural gas ashore.

At that time, the Dutch government did not yet see a need for offshore gas. After all, the Groningen gas field had just been discovered. As a result, Placid Oil turned to the German government, but by the time the pipeline was nearly at Schiermonnikoog, the Dutch government changed its mind and decided that the gas should be routed to the Dutch national grid. Consequently, the pipeline was rerouted and connected to the Emmapolder in Uithuizen, northeast of Groningen.

Today

Today, NGT owns nearly 500 kilometers of pipeline with a daily gas transport capacity of approximately 42 million Nm3, and plays a key role in the supply of natural gas.
