A single, integrated system from the North Sea to shore

The NGT infrastructure consists of approximately 500 kilometers of offshore pipelines, offshore platforms, and our gas processing plant in Uithuizen. Together, they form a single integrated connection between offshore gas production and the Dutch gas transmission network.

For over 50 years, we have ensured that natural gas from the North Sea is safely and reliably brought ashore, processed, and delivered to the national gas transmission network. At the same time, we look ahead: to new offshore gas developments and to the potential future role of our infrastructure.

Offshore pipeline network
Our pipeline network connects various production areas in the Dutch North Sea to the Dutch coast and forms the backbone of the NGT system.

Offshore PlatformsOur platforms serve as key hubs in the network. This is where different parts of the system converge, facilitating the transport of gas from multiple offshore production areas to shore.

Uithuizen Gas Processing Plant
Natural gas from the North Sea comes ashore at Uithuizen. Here, we process the gas so that it meets the required specifications for delivery to Gasunie Transport Services (GTS).

Due to its strategic position as a landing and processing site, Uithuizen may also be relevant in the long term for new energy chains originating from the North Sea.

Connecting New Production to Existing Infrastructure

NGT offers offshore producers the opportunity to connect existing and new gas production to our network.

Where technically and commercially feasible, new offshore developments can utilize existing transportation and processing capacity. This allows production to be tapped efficiently and minimizes the construction of new infrastructure wherever possible.

For every new connection, we consider factors such as:
safety and technical feasibility;
available transmission and processing capacity;
reliability and asset integrity;
economic viability.

We work closely with producers and other infrastructure partners throughout this process—from initial exploration and technical assessment to implementation and commissioning.

The Future of Our Infrastructure

From Gas Infrastructure to Energy Infrastructure

The North Sea is changing. In addition to natural gas, offshore wind and CO₂ storage are continuing to develop, and new hydrogen value chains may emerge in the long term. This could also change the role of existing offshore infrastructure.

For NGT, the future begins with carefully managing and preserving the value of what is already in place today.

As long as natural gas remains part of the energy system, we will continue to use our infrastructure to safely and reliably transport and process Dutch offshore gas production. At the same time, we support, where possible, new offshore gas developments that can utilize our existing system.

In the longer term, we are exploring which parts of our pipelines, platforms, and onshore facilities could potentially be repurposed for other applications, including the transport of hydrogen and CO₂ or for energy storage.

Reuse is not an end in itself. A new application must be demonstrably safe, technically feasible, economically viable, and market-driven. Only when these conditions are met can reuse be an attractive alternative to building new infrastructure.

In doing so, NGT is opting for a pragmatic long-term strategy: we do not invest in advance in uncertain developments, but at the same time prevent strategically valuable infrastructure from being lost prematurely.

In this way, we preserve options for future energy chains and create opportunities to repurpose our infrastructure when a concrete and sustainable business case arises.

The most sustainable infrastructure may well be the infrastructure that’s already in place.
